Grading System in Bangladesh University - CGPA CALCULATOR

Grading System in Bangladesh University, A university students final grade is determined by their overall performance in various academic activities, including assignments, exams, quizzes, term papers, laboratory assessments, and class attendance. Each course instructor is responsible for evaluating and assigning the student’s grade.

Determination of CGPA:

The Letter Grading system is used to assess a student’s performance in a course. The passing grades include A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, and D, while F represents a failing grade.

Additionally, the grading system includes special designations: ‘I’ stands for Incomplete, ‘W’ indicates Withdrawal, and ‘R’ signifies Repeat. Students receiving grades such as F, I, or W do not progress toward graduation, and these grades are not considered in the calculation of the Grade Point Average (GPA).

Grading System in Bangladesh University Guideline

  • Obtained Grade Points: The grade points earned in a course are calculated by multiplying the grade points obtained by the credit hours assigned to that course.
  • Grade point Average (GPA): GPA stands for the Grade Point Average, which is calculated by averaging the total grade points earned by a student in a semester across all courses taken.
  • CGPA: The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the overall average of the grade points obtained by a student across all completed semesters, including the most recent one.

For example: if a student completes three courses in a semester with credit hours C1, C2, and C3 and earns grade points G1, G2, and G3 in these courses, the CGPA is calculated accordingly.

On the report card, only the Letter Grade is displayed, while the CGPA is determined using numerical grade values assigned as per the grading scale.

Grades Without Number Value – Non-Numerical Grades

  • P (Pass): Indicates that the student has successfully completed the course requirements and passed.
  • I (Incomplete): This grade is given to a student who, despite maintaining regular attendance and showing satisfactory performance, is unable to complete the course work due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances. The student must provide evidence of such reasons within the last two weeks of the term to the teacher.
  • W (Withdrawal): This grade is assigned when a student withdraws from the course voluntarily, with permission from the relevant authorities.

Incomplete Grade

The I grade is provided to students who have been regularly attending classes, submitting satisfactory work, and are unable to finish the course due to unforeseen circumstances like illness. The student must inform the instructor within the last two weeks of the semester with valid proof.

If the student fails to make up the incomplete work within the following term, the I grade will automatically convert to F (Failing Grade), which will result in a 0.00 grade point by the Controller of Examinations.

Change of Grade

If there is a need for a grade revision due to any issue, faculties may amend final grades within one full academic year. However, such changes must be approved by the Head of the Department before it can be reflected on the grade sheet.

Conclusion

The grading system plays a vital role in evaluating students’ performance and providing a clear understanding of their academic progress. By using letter grades, grade points, and a cumulative GPA/CGPA system, educational institutions ensure a fair and structured assessment method. The inclusion of non-numerical grades such as P (Pass), I (Incomplete), and W (Withdrawal) provides flexibility for students facing challenges, allowing them to continue their education without penalization under certain circumstances.
